Humility

How can we show our patients that we are humble?

In order to show our humility, we need to:

Translate our medical terms,

Admire our patients, and

Be Gracious with all our interactions.

We must Translate because medical-ese is a foreign language,

What is the best way to translate our hospital and medical jargon?

Avoid, or define, all medical terms.

        Explain medical vernacular with metaphors.

        Explain your thought processes.

To Admire means to make your patient the special one, not you.

How can I show my admiration?

Pay complements every chance you get.

Be enthusiastic… Show that you are sincerely interested in their welfare

Make a little small talk.  Ask a non-health question or two.

Being Gracious is to deny yourself any perceived superiority.

What can I do to be gracious?

        Apologize a lot.

Ask your patients to do things, don’t tell them.

Be seated, whenever possible, for interactions

        Smile!
